Last week the Education Review Office was in school reviewing how we operate and how well we serve our students and our community. They were pleased with what they saw. We are embedding good practices throughout the school and they were impressed by the quality of teaching and learning they saw and also the quality of the relationships we have. They are currently writing their report which we will review and agree on before it is published next year.
|
|
Our seniors (and some of our juniors) are well into their NZQA exams and we continue to work with them to ensure they have achieved everything they need to before the end of the year. If our achievement team has contacted you, can you please ensure your child comes into school to complete their work so that they can begin next year by focusing on the work ahead.

Year 10 Reduction Printmaking

Our Year 10 Painting and Printmaking art students have been busy creating beautiful reduction prints inspired by Aotearoa’s native flora and fauna. Each artwork layers colour and texture to celebrate our local taonga in a unique way. The results are vibrant, detailed, and full of personality; a showcase of creativity and care.

All students heading off to University, Polytechnic or other Tertiary institutions for 2026 should have begun their application for Studylink. This allows you access to student allowance, student cost of living and course fees loans. To be eligible for the free fees in the final year of study, you must be registered with Studylink.

Cooking up a storm in Japanese
Last week, the 9JAP2 students took on the challenge of trying a popular Japanese dish, Takoyaki. For many, it was their first time tasting real octopus. Before cooking, the class went through the recipe in both English and Japanese. It was wonderful to see students confidently using Japanese phrases like “Itadakimasu” (said before eating). A proud moment for Sensei!

With only a few weeks left in the school year, the class is looking forward to continuing their journey of learning Japanese language and culture through fun, hands on activities.

𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗕𝗘𝗘
Whakatāne High School hosted the 𝗕𝗢𝗣𝗦𝗦 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗯𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 on a beautiful, clear day with minimal wind. The event attracted teams from five schools across the Bay of Plenty.
|
In the Open division, Katikati College claimed a narrow 7–6 victory over the Whakatāne High School Gold team in a thrilling final. Meanwhile, the Katikati College Girls and Whakatāne High School Gold Girls teams battled to an exciting draw in their final.
|
Congratulations to the following students who received their team’s Spirit Awards — given in recognition of fair play, a positive attitude, competitive spirit, and for being a pleasure to play against:

BASKETBALL
Congratulations Albie Cameron and Toihau Wharewera Hape, who along with with team mates from Whakatane Intermediate School Cole Charteris and James Searancke, took out the U14 division of the Welcome Bay 3x3 basketball tournament recently.

| The Whakatane High School Principal and Board of Trustees have stated that any students applying to attend a trip must have all previous years' charges paid before they can be accepted/approved to go on any trips valued at $500 or more. If a student applies for a trip and they have an outstanding account for previous years their parent/caregiver will be notified. |
As per the information on students' statements that are sent out a minimum of twice per term, there is the option to set up an automatic payment to a student's account in order to reduce the impact of fees building up. |
When a student leaves, if there is a credit balance on their school account this will be refunded when requested by the parent/caregiver. |

If you have spare ice cream containers at home, please bring them in to the front office. Even if it's just 1 or 2, we are in need of lots!

Health New Zealand Information
- Measles is circulating and is very contagious. There is now measles in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu, Nelson and Wellington, and we expect further cases across New Zealand.
- Watch out for symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash. Visit this link for further information.
- Anyone with measles symptoms must stay at home and should seek urgent advice by ringing their doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
- Anyone who is closely exposed to a measles case must stay at home. Heath New Zealand will provide individuals with advice on a case-by-case basis (including when they can leave quarantine at home).
- Health New Zealand is actively working with the schools that currently have measles cases.
- People are considered immune to measles after having two doses of a measles vaccine from 12 months or older, or if you have had measles before. For more information on measles immunity visit:
