In 2026 we continue with pastoral support for our young people at Whakatāne High School.

We have Deans at each year level to make sure parents have a clear point of connection to the school at their child’s year level (in addition to this, parents will also have a connection via their child’s Student Mentor).

The Deans are responsible for developing a wellbeing program that supports students to be confident, resilient and connected learners. This change has been developed through self-review, student and whanau voice. We also have Junior and Senior Deans for greater support of our Te Aka Matua students.

Mentors and Mentor Time

 
Mentoring plays a pivotal role at Whakatāne High School. All teachers have a group of students for whom they are the mentor. The mentor is responsible for overseeing and monitoring their students’ academic and wellbeing needs. Mentors should be the first point of contact if there are any questions or concerns.
We have two timetabled slots during the week for mentors to work on necessary skills and behaviours which support learning with their group. We check on academic progress and work towards the goals students and their whānau have set for themselves. We ensure that Student Mentors connect with the parents at least twice during the year in a mentoring hui, that is designed to provide an overview of achievement, engagement and goal setting across a student’s subjects.
We also teach some social and life skills to support wellbeing and to equip students for life beyond school.

Each Year 9 class is allocated either one or two Buddy Prefects. These Prefects help guide the Year 9 students during their first two terms at high school, they attend the Year 9 Big Day Out, and are there to answer any questions the students may have.
