Sport At WHS
Whakatāne High School is proud to offer a large range of sports for students to participate in throughout the year. Whakatāne High School teams compete at local, regional and national level with the highlight for many teams being the opportunity to compete at national tournaments in Summer and Winter.
Whakatāne High School has a strong working relationship with staff, volunteers and local clubs to ensure that all teams are catered for and have a strong network of coaches and managers in place.
We have a strong history of sporting success at Whakatāne High School with many of our students and teams gaining places at regional and national events as well as many students making regional and national representative teams.
Some of our former students have even gone onto to represent the country at World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
Australian Sports Performance Tour
In 2024, Whakatāne High School sent 89 students (7 teams) on a Sports Performance Tour to the Gold Coast that saw students complete a high performance programme at the Gold Coast Performance Centre and play against local teams. This experience is something the sports department wants to build on and are looking at future trips to a range of locations around the world. The next Australian Sports Performance Tour will be in 2026.
